An Ode to The Fifth
Since opening its doors in 1856, the mansion at the corner of 5th Avenue and 28th Street hasn’t just observed New York’s transformation—it’s been part of it, evolving with each era while preserving its timeless grandeur.
As part of NoMad, we’re inspired by the blend of history and creativity around us. Here, we’ve carved out our own space in one of New York’s most dynamic neighborhoods, home to wanderers, artists, and culinary pioneers.
Now, one year into our own chapter as The Fifth Avenue Hotel, this moment invites us to reflect on the journey so far: what we’ve gained and how we’ve grown in this short time. And what better way to mark this moment than by highlighting the milestones that have shaped our first year?
Words from Our Proprietor, Alex Ohebshalom
As The Fifth Avenue Hotel celebrates its first anniversary, our proprietor, Alex Ohebshalom, looks back on the journey with immense pride and gratitude. He describes this milestone as “surreal and monumental,” reflecting on the vision he carried for years. “It was challenging enough conceiving the vision and bringing it to life… with all the enormous expectations that it carried,” Alex recalls.
Yet, after living through a year filled with “magical” moments, his dreams have not only been validated but exceeded. “There were so many questions, so much I had fantasized about for so many years; the first year validated everything and much more.” He remembers the 2023 Opening Party as a key highlight—“a night to always cherish,” complete with legendary jazz performances, a life-sized photo booth by JR, and Sarah Jessica Parker’s unforgettable champagne toast.
Several other milestones stand out for Alex. The hotel’s first full Mansion Buyout in May 2024 was a bold new concept. “We launched an exclusive, audacious, one-of-a-kind experience where guests could rent out the entire mansion,” Alex explains. Another proud moment came in June 2024, when The Fifth was awarded two Michelin Keys. “This is super meaningful for me because it highlights our outstanding commitment to service and the guest experience,” he says.
Looking forward, Alex is filled with excitement. “We’ve only scratched the surface,” he says. His deep appreciation for his team shines through: “You are all my heroes, my inspiration,” he says, calling them the “dream weavers and magic makers” who have turned this vision into a reality. For the guests, his message is heartfelt: “Thank you to all! To know that you’ve made The Fifth Avenue Hotel your new home away from home brings a lot of joy to our hearts.” With even more surprises in store, Alex promises, “It’s only the beginning. Onward and upward!”
What the Press Have Said
In our first year, The Fifth Avenue Hotel has made waves in the luxury hospitality world, with glowing reviews from leading voices in travel, design, and culture. We were honored to receive two Michelin Keys, underscoring our commitment to excellent service. Condé Nast Traveler included us in their 2024 Hot List, calling us “the whimsical, independently-owned hotel this city deserves,” while Travel + Leisure named us as one of the “Best New City Hotels of 2024,” solidifying our place in New York’s vibrant hotel scene.
Our culinary program has also been recognized for its creativity and craft. The New York Times named Café Carmellini as one of the “100 Best Restaurants in New York City,” praising the dishes by Chef Andrew Carmellini as “fresh and sharp; he’s having fun showing off skills you don’t see often these days.” Esquire also spotlighted The Portrait Bar as one of the “Best Bars in America 2024,” lauding its “quiet but confident virtuosity” and globally inspired cocktails.
When it comes to our design and interiors, Architectural Digest described The Fifth as one of “20 Stunning New Hotels for Global Exploration,” praising the way Martin Brudnizki “remixes Gilded Age glamour” throughout the property.
Our Fifth Birthday Wish for the Year Ahead
Our wish for the year ahead? We want The Fifth to be more than just a place to rest. We want it to be a playground for the curious, a canvas for the dreamers, and a stage for those who see the world a little differently. It’s about offering guests the freedom to explore, create, and dream within our walls and to leave with memories shaped by moments of surprise and joy.
